Glimmer Selected for Market Street Prototyping Festival

June 14, 2016

We are pleased to announce that Variable Projects has been selected for the 2016 Market Street Prototyping Festival. Our installation Glimmer will be deployed on San Francisco's Market Street from October 6 - 8. The festival, staged jointly by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and the San Francisco Planning Department, seeks to reimagine new models of civic infrastructure for one of the city's most vital public spaces. A jury of esteemed public officials and design professionals selected thirty projects to be installed along the length of Market Street during the festival, which is expected to engage over 500,000 people over its three-day duration.

Glimmer will be installed in the Embarcadero district of Market Street near the waterfront and the city's historic Ferry Building. The project re-presents the traditional form of a masonry vault with a plush thicket of colorful suspended filaments. The installation will be an immersive, tactile environment of color and softness that provides a bright oasis in the urban environment and invites playful interaction for all visitors. See the project page for preliminary images, and stay tuned for updates in the coming months.
